Terms of use
A safe and respectful community.
These terms explain how Dreamt Awake works, what we ask of you, and what you can expect from us.
Last updated October 1, 2026

Draft. A lawyer reviews this before launch.
Who we are
Dreamt Awake is a business. We run a service where people give money to people living with cancer, to help with rent, bills, medical costs and lost pay. We are not a charity, and gifts made here are not donations to one.
These terms are an agreement between you and Dreamt Awake. By using the service you accept them.
The service
Anybody can browse, give to a person or to the Community Fund, follow a person and read their updates. Giving once needs no account. An account keeps your history, the people you follow and any monthly gifts.
A person who needs support applies, is verified, and then posts needs: one bill at a time. Once verified, what they ask for is theirs to decide. They may attach the bill; it stays private, seen only by them and our review team. People give to a need, to the person, or to the fund.
We may change the service, and these terms, as we learn. When a change matters to you we tell you by email before it takes effect.
Verification
Nobody receives a dollar before they are verified. Verification means an identity check through Stripe, a letter from an oncologist or a pathology report and a treatment plan that our review team confirms with the doctor’s office, and a bank account connected through Stripe.
A verified person confirms every 6 months where they are in treatment. Support runs from 60 days before treatment begins to 12 months after active treatment ends; if treatment begins again, so does eligibility. Then no new gifts are taken.
Applying with false documents or a false story ends the account and may be reported to the authorities. Money received that way is owed back.
Gifts and the 5%
We keep 5% of every gift. It is shown before you give and it is never optional. The card processing fee is added to what you pay and shown before you give; it is the card company's, not ours.
Payments run through Stripe. Gifts reach a person through Stripe Connect on a set day each week. Anything given above a need’s amount goes to the person’s next need, or to the Community Fund when none is open. The page says so before you give.
A gift is a personal gift to a person and is not tax deductible. It is final once paid. If a gift was made by mistake, write to us within a few days and we will do what we fairly can.
A monthly gift is taken each month until you pause or stop it in your page. You can do that at any time.
Notes
A note travels only with a gift. Nobody at Dreamt Awake reads it before the person it is for. It arrives sealed in their private inbox; they read it, thank you, or report it. It is never shown publicly. A reported note is read by our team and may be removed, and its sender may be blocked. We do not deliver contact details, and a note that is cruel, prying, sexual or threatening ends the sender’s account.
By writing a note you allow us to deliver it to the person, with your first name or as anonymous, as you chose. It stays between you and them.
Your account
You are responsible for your password and for what happens through your account. Tell us right away if you think somebody else is using it.
You must be 18 or older to give or to apply. One person, one account.
You can delete your account at any time in Settings. What happens to your data then is written in our Privacy page.
What we do not allow
No direct contact with a person you gave to outside the note and the thank you. No asking for their address, their phone number or their bank details. No using the service to advertise, to fish for personal information or to harm anybody.
No copying a person’s page, photo or story to another site. Anybody may share the link to a page.
We may remove content, hold a payout, or close an account that breaks these terms. We tell the person in one plain sentence, and where we fairly can, we give them a way to answer.
Ending
You can stop using Dreamt Awake at any time. We can end the service, or your access to it, with notice by email, except where we must act at once to protect somebody. Gifts already sent stay sent.
We provide the service as it is. We are not responsible for what a person does with a gift once it reaches them, and our liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the past twelve months, as far as the law allows.
Prohibited conduct
No harassing, threatening or deceiving anybody. No false stories, false documents or pretending to be somebody else. No asking a person for contact, money or anything outside Dreamt Awake. No copying pages, photos or stories, by hand or by machine. No using the service for anything the law forbids.
Your words and ours
Your story, your updates and your letters stay yours. By posting them you let us show them on Dreamt Awake, in link previews and in the emails the service sends, as you chose to show them. You can take them down at any time.
The name Dreamt Awake, the design of the service and the words we wrote are ours. Anybody may share a link to a page.
What we can and cannot promise
We verify every person carefully, and we say exactly how. We cannot promise that every story is complete, that a need will be funded, or that a gift will be used as you hoped. We provide the service as it is, and our liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the past twelve months, as far as the law allows.
Changes to these terms
When these terms change in a way that matters to you, we tell you by email before the change takes effect, and the date at the top changes. Using the service after that means you accept the new terms.
Contact
Questions about these terms go to hello@carerelief.org. We answer within two business days.
